Itinerary

  • ​12:30 - Arrival/Check-in
    • ​Arrival Information:
      • Buses can drop off in the large main circle drive of Sherrard High School (South Side)
      • Parking can be around back of the West Side of Sherrard High School by the SHS Band Trailer on the grass
      • Students can wear street clothing for rehearsals
      • Students will enter in the main doors
        • Band: proceed directly across the Commons to Gym 1
        • Choir: turn left and proceed directly into the Auditorium
      • Director are welcome to use the SHS Band Room or my office as our homeroom all day.  Bus Drivers are welcome to use the Band Library as a place to sit and relax.

Guest Directors

Dr. Anthony M. Messina
ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ATHLETIC BANDS

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN

Dr. Anthony M. Messina serves as Assistant Director of Bands, Assistant Director of the Marching Illini, and Assistant Director of the Fighting Illini Athletic Bands at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign where his responsibilities include assisting with the 375-member Marching Illini, and conducting the Hindsley Symphonic Band, Women’s Basketball Band, Volleyball Band.

Prior to his appointment, Dr. Messina served as Visiting Associate Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands at Florida Atlantic University where he oversaw all aspects of the athletic band program, including direction of the Marching Owls, Parliament Sound Basketball Band, and conducting the Symphony Band. Under Dr. Messina’s direction, ensembles have performed for President Trump in 2018 and at the nationally televised C-USA Championship and 2017 Cheribundi Tart Cherry Boca Raton Bowl.

A proponent of new music and historical perspective, Dr. Messina’s current research endeavors include Leonard B. Smith, the Detroit Concert Band, and their discography. He has given presentations at the College Band Directors National Association Southern Division Conference, the Massachusetts Music Educators Association Conference, and the 2018 International Association for the Research and Promotion of Wind Music (IGEB) Conference.

Dr. Messina holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Wind Conducting from the University of Kansas, a Master of Music in Wind Conducting from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, and a Bachelor of Music Education from Wayne State University.

Dr. Brian J. Winnie
​Director of Choral Activities
Western Illinois University

Brian J. Winnie, D.M.A, is the Director of Choral Activities at Western Illinois University where he teaches undergraduate and graduate choral conducting & choral literature courses, and conducts the University Singers. An active festival conductor and adjudicator, Dr. Winnie has been artist-in-residence in Ekaterinburg, Russia and has worked with festival choirs throughout the United States. He has presented topics on 21st century choral/vocal pedagogy and bridging the gap between classical and contemporary vocal technique at State NAfME, State & Regional ACDA, and International Conferences. Dr. Winnie has published articles in the Voice and Speech Review, ChorTeach Journal, and is editor and contributing author to "The Voice Teacher's Cookbook," published by Meredith Music Publications.

Prior to this appointment, Dr. Winnie served as Director of Choral Activities & Voice, and chair of the music department, at Southwestern College (Kansas); was the Artistic Director of the community-based choirs ChoralSounds and VocalSounds Northwest (Seattle); and taught for seven years in public education at both middle and high school levels. In addition, he has been the recipient of numerous awards including "Exemplary Teacher Award" at Southwestern College, "Outstanding Young Conductor Award," presented by the Pennsylvania chapter of the American Choral Directors Association, and was nominated for the “Excellence in Teaching Award” at the University of Washington.

Dr. Winnie currently serves on the Editorial Board for the Voice and Speech Review and has served as Secretary for the Central New Jersey Music Education Association, and Middle School/Jr. High Repertoire and Standards Chair for ACDA-PA. He is an active member of the ACDA, NATS, and NAfME.

A native of Pennsylvania, Dr. Winnie received his B.S. in Music Education from the Pennsylvania State University, Master of Music Education from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and his Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting from the University of Washington, where he studied with Geoffrey Boers & Giselle Wyers.  He is an Estill Master Trainer and Estill Mentor & Course Instructor-Candidate of Estill Voice Training. His primary research interests involve the effect of gesture on voice production, and the development of a 21st century choral pedagogy that encompasses all styles of music and is based in the principles of voice science.
