Jazz Bands

Jazz Ensemble I

Jazz Ensemble I:
The South Elgin Jazz Ensemble I is an audition only group made up of approximately 22 students who want to participate in a big band style jazz band. The Jazz Ensemble I is an outside of school ensemble for students enrolled in the South Elgin Bands who are looking for a fun and challenging group to expose themselves to the world of jazz. This group rehearses twice per week for an hour and a half once the marching season concludes.  This ensemble follows traditional jazz instrumentation called for by the big band jazz charts.
The South Elgin Jazz Ensemble I is the top of three jazz big bands at South Elgin, and is a competitive ensemble that attends multiple competitions and festivals each season. The band performs at all of the school’s band/jazz concerts, select jazz festivals/competitions such as the Jazz In The Meadows Competition, Evanston Jazz Festival, New Trier Jazz Festival, and other performances around South Elgin.
The philosophy behind the South Elgin Jazz Program is to expose students to different styles of music and give students an opportunity to express themselves and show their creativity through music.
